When you work with a Rails 3.1+ application, you will be working with the asset pipeline. The asset pipeline is awesome until you deploy. Then it will be distinclty less awesome if you haven't done everything as the pipeline expected it from you.
An annoying part of using font icons is that the icons usually need to live in the DOM. This is a step back from the time when we defined raster icons with background-image, in the CSS.
It doesn't have to be that way.
